This page shows the family of Friederike Witkowski, and much of it comes from THIS family tree.  Friederike married Jakob Jacobi.  His family can be found HERE, and Friederike and Jakob’s descendants are found HERE.

The first person listed on this page was called “Marcus aus Witkowo” (Marcus from Witkowo) or Mortje Witkowski.  He was from the town of Witkowo, which lies southeast of Poznan (Posen), and is now in Poland (see MAP). I recently received an email from a historian in Witowo who had found the gravestones of the spouses of two of Mortje’s grandsons. The gravestones had been used as paving stones since the Nazi time. See the photos near the bottom of this page.

On this page can be found the names of Richard Witting, a close confidant of Kaiser Wilhelm II, and Richard’s brother, Felix Witkowski, who went by the name of Maximilian Harden.  Harden was one of the most influential German journalists of the early 20th century.

Born in Berlin in 1861, Felix Witkowski worked as an actor before becoming a journalist, and taking the pen name of Maximilian Harden.  He was the editor of the weekly journal, Die Zukunft (The Future) from 1892 to 1922.  He started out as a strong supporter of Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, who, under Kaiser Wilhelm I, had overseen the unification of Germany. After the death of Wilhelm I, Bismarck had a falling out with the new Kaiser, Wilhelm II, and Bismarck was forced to resign from the government in 1890.  Harden continued to support Bismarck during this period and was very critical of the Kaiser, although he did support the Kaiser later, during World War I.

Harden is most famous for having “outed” the homosexual entourage surrounding the Kaiser, in what became known as the Harden-Eulenburg affair.  The first hint of a scandal occurred when, at a party the Kaiser was attending, one of his chief military officers had a heart attack while performing a dance wearing a tutu.  While this incident was hushed up, in 1907 Harden wrote about the homosexual relationship between Philipp, Prince of Eulenberg, and Kuno Graf von Moltke, both high ranking members of the Kaiser’s inner circle.

Some say that the resulting resignations of (relatively) pro-peace members of the German government, and their replacement by more hawkish military men was a root cause of the First World War.  Harden himself is said to have later regretted publishing about the affair.  Click HERE for more details.

The family data on this page comes primarily from the Jacobi family tree shown at right, above.  Due to the age of the tree, some of the names are difficult to read; the names on this page with question marks are my best guess as to what they are.  Thank you to Jochen Topf and Eva Werner for additional information on the Witting and Harden families, to Michael Rosenstock for Witkowski information, to Doren Zeilberger for information on the Latz family, and to Barbara Witton Ford for details of the Witton family.
