Where the Flörsheim family came from is somewhat obscure. I have been told by one Flörsheim descendant that they originally came from Spain. At one point they most likely lived in the town of Flörsheim, hence the name. Flörsheim is a small town between Frankfurt and Mainz, about 17 miles (28 km) from the center of Frankfurt. The earliest information I have has them living in the town of Fürth in the early 1700’s. There are three Fürths in Germany, they probably lived in the one next to Nürnberg in Bavaria. This data shows that Sussmann Flörsheim (1745 - 1835) moved from Fürth to Obergleen. The earliest person whose location I am quite sure about is Michael Yechiel Flörsheim, who was born and died in the town of Romrod, a hundred kilometers northeast of Frankfurt (see MAP). Other than the two earliest generations, the families shown on this page all originated in Romrod. The towns of Romrod, Obergleen, Alsfeld, and Angenrod, where people on this page are from, are all within about 10 km (6 miles) of each other.
The Jews of Romrod were buried in the Jewish cemetery in the nearby town of Angenrod. I visited there and was able to identify, among others, the graves of Feibel Florsheim and his wife Nanni Florsheim (neé Wolf), my great-great-great-grandparents, and Michael Flörsheim, my great-great-great-great-grandfather (see photo).
There are several other Flörsheim families; it is not clear whether or not they are related, although it is likely that they all lived in the town of Flörsheim at some point. Two of the Flörsheim families lived in Frankfurt in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The name can be spelled FLÖRSHEIM or FLOERSHEIM. Those families that came to America usually spelled it FLORSHEIM.
One large branch of the Flörsheim family is that of the descendants of Isaak Flörsheim and his wife Friederika . Isaak and his sons came to the U.S., apparently separately, in the mid-1800’s. The family settled in Chicago and there are many descendants now living in the U.S.
Most people today associate the name FLORSHEIM with shoes. The Florsheim Shoe Company was started in Chicago in 1892 by Milton Florsheim, who is listed below. Milton grew the company to be one of the largest shoe manufacturers in the world, through both good shoe design and innovative distribution methods. In 1952 the family sold the company. After that, it slowly declined, until it went into bankruptcy in 2002. At that point it was bought back by members of the Florsheim family. The company, Weyco, that bought Florsheim, was headed by Thomas Florsheim, Milton’s grandson, and the company is now being run by Thomas’ sons, Tom, Jr., and John.
Much of the information on the early Flörsheims is from Eva Floersheim in Norway and Israel. Additional information came from George Florsheim in Chile, and from Stanton Miller, Tom Florsheim, Inge Joseph, Caroline Heller, Jill Mittelman, and Janet Akaha in the U.S. Thank you to all of them. Thank you also to the town of Romrod for the excellent work they did in restoring the former Jewish Synagogue (shown at right), which helps keep alive the memory of the town’s Jewish community.
In the list below, names in RED are people murdered during the Holocaust, 1933-1945.
